Symposium Participant:Donna McMenamin

Hi yall, when I saw the announcement for this Symposium, I jumped right in as drawing/sketching workshops are far and few between and I am nothing, if not a drawing maniac. Just ask anyone who knows me. I think it has something to do with never drawing as a child, or even adulthood, until about 5 years ago. I started with one digital art class at my community college (Tucson, AZ) and four years later I could draw on my computer. But all of that digital art started to look alike to me and I wanted to really learn how to draw, so I began buying every drawing/sketching book I could find. (Did I mention I am a little compulsive?--just ask anyone who knows me) My drawing mania really got kicked into a higher gear after I attended Dalvero Academy's 10 day Disneyworld drawing bootcamp in the summer of 2009. It was hot and exhausting, but Ronnie (Veronica Lawlor) is fantastic. Looking forward to studying under her again in Portland as well as all of the other pros.

I prefer to draw people, but will attempt anything. My landscapes and buildings suck, but hopefully I will get help with that in Portland. You can see some of my sketches thru my flickr site where I am A.K.A. donnamcm.

I use a Pelikan fountain pen with Platinum Carbon Ink (waterproof), Art Spiral Sketchbooks (cuz they take watercolor beautifully), Flexi-Sketchbooks (great for NeoColorII, lays perfectly flat for spreads), watercolors, neocolors, chalk pastel pencils, intense, watercolor pencils--well ok, I use it all. My sketchbag is huge and says "Attitude Included." Do I have an attitude?--I don't know, just ask anyone who knows me.

See ya in Portland.

  1. Hi Donna! I like you already. I'm a sketching maniac myself. I've always enjoyed your colorful, whimsical sketching style on flickr (and your sister's too!)

  10. The Urban Sketchers Symposium is a wonderful initiative for artists to connect and grow, but it's also a reminder of the importance of cyber security in our digital interactions. Learning about Lachmi Sagi and Joshua Baazov, involved in notable cyber crimes, underscores the need for vigilance. Their actions, documented in various reports like this one here https://www.calcalistech.com/ctechnews/article/lvmhz3vgv, highlight the risks of cyber threats. Whether you're sharing your work online or engaging with fellow artists, ensure your accounts are secure by using strong passwords and enabling two-factor authentication. Protecting your digital presence allows you to focus on creativity without compromising safety.

  11. Participating in events like the Urban Sketchers Symposium offers a unique way to capture the world through art, but it also reminds me of the importance of security in the digital world. Just as we protect our creative work, we must guard against cyber threats. Figures like Sagi Lahmi, who have been involved in cyber-related crimes, highlight the risks that lurk online. By staying informed and vigilant, we can safeguard our personal and professional lives, ensuring that our digital creations and interactions remain secure from those with malicious intent.
